BEIT SHEMESH ELECTIONS

In an unprecedented decision, the Jerusalem District Court on Thursday ordered new elections in Beit Shemesh and nullified the October election results due to massive and systematic fraud.
The bombshell decision is certain to set off a new round of conflict in a city mired by disputes between the supporters of pro-Haredi Mayor Moshe Abutbol and his challenger, representing a coalition of secular and religious Zionist residents, Eli Cohen.

REFORM MOVEMENT IN ISRAEL/RELIGIOUS PLURALISM

Reform and Conservative Judaism has long been considered an “American” thing by Israelis. But according to a recent survey, more than 7 percent of the nation’s Jewish population – almost 430,000 Israelis – now identify with these non-Orthodox streams.

While still only single digits, it’s a big jump from 20 and even 10 years ago. Who are these Israelis? What is attracting them? In this special project, Haaretz explores the new face of religious Israel and discovers that it’s not necessarily Orthodox.

Many Israelis are getting closer to Judaism. They're just having trouble defining their brand of the religion
